Our Mission

To protect all Australian freshwater turtle species and to prevent extinction by ensuring sustainable populations can and do exist in the wild.

Strategy Statement

Our purpose is to undertake, promote and fund research projects for all Australian freshwater turtle species as necessary. This research will include field studies, protection and management of wild populations and development of recovery plans and ex-situ breeding programs. We will form alliances with other wildlife conservation organisations and establish centres for conservation, research and education.

Why Freshwater Turtles?

As you may be aware, the scientific community and conservationists have been protecting the well being of marine turtles for many years. The dilemma is that many of the same threats to their survival have been identified to impact upon freshwater turtles as well.

Almost 67% of the world’s freshwater turtles and tortoises are listed as THREATENED in the 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Many new Australian species will be included on the Threatened Species list the moment they are described by science.

What Can You Do?

You can help by becoming a member, adopting a turtle or by purchasing some of our merchandise. Your support will enable us to conduct field research, monitor water quality, improve habitat conditions, purchase vital equipment and promote awareness through education.
